Chemical manufacturing cost: like food processing, plus saleable byproducts
Costing a batch chemical product. Yield chains and cleaning between batches work as in food processing, with one addition — when a process yields more than one saleable output, the cost has to be split.
The structure matches **food processing**: batch production, material losing mass at each step, cleaning charged per changeover. Read that guide first, along with the yield chain — both transfer without change.
Two things are different.
Byproducts: how to split the batch cost
Many processes produce more than one saleable output. The batch cost then has to be divided between them, and **how you divide decides the main product's cost**.
- Treat the byproduct as a RECOVERY: subtract its sale value from the batch cost, and the remainder is the main product's cost. Simple, and reasonable when the byproduct is minor.
- Split the batch cost by value: each output carries a share proportional to the revenue it brings. Reasonable when both outputs are substantial.
Waste treatment is a production cost
What cannot be sold has to be treated, and for chemicals that is a real invoice — a licensed contractor, or your own treatment plant to run.
It scales with output, so it belongs to the product rather than being swept into general overhead. Put it in overhead and a genuine improvement in waste generation shows up nowhere at all.
