Paper consumption: how many up, and what the trim is worth
Paper is usually the biggest line in a print cost, and imposition decides most of it. How to measure real consumption, why the sheet size question is worth asking before the press question, and what waste paper is really worth.
Paper is normally the largest single line in a print cost. And how much of it a job consumes is decided less by the job than by **imposition** — how many pieces fit on a sheet, and how much of that sheet is trimmed away.
How many up is a step function
Fitting one more piece on a sheet does not reduce paper cost gradually; it reduces it by a whole share at once. A piece a few millimeters smaller can move from four up to six up and take a third off the paper line.
That is why the useful question is asked at the design stage rather than at the press: **is this size within a few millimeters of fitting one more up?** Nobody can answer it without the cost sheet, because until paper is costed per piece the question does not occur to anyone.
Measure consumption, do not calculate it
Sheets issued for the job, divided by good pieces delivered. Both numbers exist already, and the ratio captures imposition, makeready, spoilage and trim in one figure.
A calculated figure from the imposition alone will always be lower than reality, because it knows nothing about the sheets destroyed reaching color or the ones lost in finishing.
What waste paper is worth
Not zero — waste paper and board are sold — but well below what you paid, and printed waste is usually worth less than clean trim. Use the price on the merchant's weigh ticket.
And the double subtraction warning applies here as everywhere: charge sheets consumed, then credit the recovery. Charging only the area of the pieces **and** crediting the trim subtracts the same paper twice.
Where consumption actually improves
- Combine jobs on one sheet — different work sharing a sheet is the largest single gain available in most shops.
- Adjust piece dimensions where the design permits, to reach the next step up in pieces per sheet.
- Buy the sheet size that suits the work, rather than the size the shop has always bought.
- Check trim allowances against what the finishing equipment actually needs — they are often inherited from a machine the shop no longer owns.
