Livestock cost breakdown: the feed conversion ratio drives cost

Livestock differs from crop farming in that the input (feed) isn't a sellable product on its own - the animal CONVERTS it into weight gain, and that conversion ratio is what drives most of the cost, playing the same role yield plays in manufacturing.
The costing unit: ONE KILOGRAM OF LIVE WEIGHT GAIN or ONE HEAD SOLD - state which one you're using, since the two give a different picture when the herd's starting age/weight isn't uniform.

Two features unique to this industry
1. Feed - costed by conversion ratio, not unit price
Feed is the largest material line, but the number worth tracking isn't the unit price of feed - it's how many kilograms of feed it takes to produce one kilogram of gain: total feed issued in the period divided by total actual weight gain of the herd in that same period. This number is derivable from two records you already keep - the feed issue log and the periodic weighing log - with no new measurement needed.
2. Herd loss - unlike scrap, it can't be recovered
Animals that die or are culled during raising are the equivalent of scrap, but with a key difference: industrial scrap still recovers some material value, while a dead animal writes off essentially all the feed and veterinary cost already invested in it up to that point.
Track the loss rate SEPARATELY by growth stage - loss at the young-stock stage usually differs sharply from loss at the finishing stage - rather than blending one rate across the whole cycle.
Everything else
Machinery (housing systems, automatic feeders/waterers - mostly OWNED since they're fixed to the housing, unlike the seasonally rented equipment of crop farming). Labor (care staff by shift or by head count assigned). Consumables (needles, consumable veterinary supplies). Subcontracted work (outside veterinary service, slaughter service if not done in-house). Rework (essentially no equivalent in livestock). Packaging (only meaningful if packaging post-slaughter product in-house). Freight (specialized live-animal transport, with its own requirements to limit loss/stress in transit).
Overhead - housing depreciation, and waste/manure management cost, which is typically a much larger line than the overhead of a comparable industrial plant.

- Periodic weighing log - herd weight at period start and end.
- Veterinary log - vaccination dates, supplies used.
- Culling/mortality disposal records for the period.
