Two cost items specific to rail
1. Track access charges
Most rail systems separate the infrastructure owner (track, stations, signaling) from the train operator (locomotives, cars). The operator pays access charges per train-mile or ton-mile, similar in spirit to a trucking company's toll fees but larger in scale and locked into long-term contracts.
Where to get the number: the infrastructure access agreement/tariff with the rail infrastructure manager.
2. Shunting & marshalling cost at yards
Coupling and uncoupling cars at classification yards before they join the main train - this consumes locomotive shunting time and yard labor, a cost road freight doesn't have since trucks don't need to be "coupled" the way rail cars do.
Everything else - identical to road freight
Locomotives/cars (equipment, usually leased or long-term depreciated), traction fuel or electricity, labor (train crew, yard staff), consumables (wheels, brake shoes - divided by mileage like tires), rework, overhead (insurance, train dispatch) - apply the exact same logic as the Freight transportation guide.
